This nationally acclaimed Indian spot in Downtown offers the neighborhood a traditional Indian restaurant that they so desperately needed. Clay Pit takes great Indian food and a sophisticated, casual setting and turns it into a lively night out with friends. With both traditional and contemporary options like chicken tikka masala and curried mussels, your taste buds will be thanking you with each bite you take.

This is one of the most authentic Indian restaurants I’ve been to in a long time. A lot of reviews will say “it’s not spicy like real Indian food” and it’s true - for all the south Asian readers, the menu is westernized a little. But they have a special section for non-traditional items like Goan shrimp curry and kothmir salmon! So the tyranny of the tikka masala doesn’t have to continue! We got boti kebab and their extremely famous curried mussels to start off. Note that the kebabs come with a side of tikka masala and the mussels come in a soup of tikka masala as well, so if that’s the fix you want, don’t overdo it for yourself with a tikka masala curry haha! For our entrees we did something “lighter” so we got yellow dal tarka (which comes with fragrant basmati rice) and tandoori chicken. This is *a lot* of food for two people but I’d like to report that they made amazing leftovers! I wish we had more in our army to try their desserts because from the description it seemed like Clay Pit doesn’t compromise on authenticity as much as possible - as evidenced by plenty of cardamom, the secret ingredient to all homemade Indian desserts!

The food was awesome. You can eat either buffet or a la carte. Best Indian food in Austin and extremely nice staff. They are amenable to dietary restrictions.

Clay Pit is always a solid choice that promises consistently delicious lunch and dinner. We did one buffet and vindaloo paneer with samosas and the hibiscus mint tea. The price of the buffet and lunch plate were excellent, especially considering the quality. Also, our server was personable and attentive. We will definitely visit again!
